HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support studies of pediatric eating disorders and military child weight-based stigma at the Medical & Clinical Psychology (MPS) Department of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, MD.

The Postdoctoral Fellow would work primarily under the supervision of Drs. Natasha Schvey, Lisa Shank, and Marian Tanofsky-Kraff. The position will be focused on two clinical research projects: 1) a multi-site study (with University of Pittsburg and Mount Sinai Hospital) to validate a measure for screening eating disorders that will be relevant for both civilian and military pediatric populations; and 2) a study to elucidate multiple forms of weight stigma and their impacts on parent and child functioning, health, and well-being. Fellows will be involved in performing research tasks related to these trials, as well as supervising research assistants and graduate students in relevant research duties. In addition, fellows will have opportunities to develop research programs by writing training grant applications and authoring peer-reviewed manuscripts. Moreover, as part of MPS, fellows will participate in educational and career development trainings and workshops and become involved in other ongoing clinical research studies in the program. Responsibilities:

• Assist in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research, to include overseeing participant recruitment, retention, and data collection.
• Contribute to the development of study protocols, regulatory submissions, and research documentation as needed.
• Oversee and manage study staff (research coordinators, graduate students, volunteers), including providing day-to-day supervision, training, workflow oversight, and guidance to ensure successful study implementation and compliance with research protocols.
• Research activities across study team members and support efficient project operations, data collection, and participant management.
• Assist with the preparation, analysis, and presentation of research data for scientific meetings, reports, and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisors. This may include attendance at and participation in required training for this role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• A doctoral-level degree in a field relevant to psychology; preferably a PhD or PsyD in clinical psychology from APA-accredited graduate and internship programs obtained by the start date for the position.
• Demonstrated success in publishing research in peer-reviewed journals aligned with the position description.
• Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate scientific concepts, provide constructive feedback, and mentor research staff.
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal, leadership, and team-building skills, with the ability to supervise, support, and foster the professional development of research coordinators while working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Attention to detail as well as strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Must be able to obtain applicable Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certifications, and meet requirements to obtain a DoD Common Access Card.
• Some prior clinical and/or research experience working with individuals with eating or weight disorders, training in empirically-supported treatments, or experience working with pediatric civilian and/or military populations, preferred.

HJF is seeking a Scientist I to serve as an Associate Investigator on various sponsored studies of the Consortium for Defense Psychology (CDP).  The Research Psychologist will develop and conduct research projects, in coordination with principal investigators (PIs), statistical consultants, and both internal and external collaborators.  The CDP will lead survey research to assess the needs of military families and barriers to care, conduct secondary analyses of Military Health System records to identify predictors of access and dropout, and test a new telehealth referral network to improve care quality. CDP’s work will directly advance knowledge of mental, emotional, developmental, behavioral (MEDB) conditions and support the development of innovative, scalable interventions for military-connected children and families.

This position will be in support of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences’ Consortium for Defense Psychology (CDP), which is based in Bethesda, MD. CDP strives to be the central hub for the Military Health System (MHS) in the development and implementation of training and education to clinicians of military-connected individuals. A key program under the CDP is the DoD Child Collaboratory study, which utilizes tele-education and telehealth to increase capacity of MTFs and community providers to provide high-quality, culturally relevant care to military children. CDP recently received additional funding to launch multiple lines of research that align to the Child Collaboratory project’s goals. The new studies will involve leveraging electronic medical record data to examine clinic-, provider-, and patient-level factors (e.g., staffing, caseloads, parental rank) linked to access and early dropout from psychotherapy. Analyses will also explore associations with high-cost care (e.g., ER visits, hospitalizations) and intergenerational impacts of parental military exposures on child outcomes. Additional studies will examine the feasibility and acceptability of a novel telehealth referral network at one or more MHS sites, and examine barriers and facilitators to care via surveying providers and military connected families. 

Responsibilities:

• Provide oversight and operational leadership for the day-to-day management of clinical research activities, problem solves research-related issues, serves as a liaison for communicating with research implementation sites, and ensures effective use of Center resources and personnel time.
• Process and interpret experimental data, working alongside statistical consultants. 
• Formulate experimental hypotheses and design experimental protocols.
• Make scientific observations, maintain detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensure documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
• Coordinate and contribute to new grant and funding applications.
• Maintain effective and timely communication with scientific collaborators; serves as a representative of the Center and in this capacity, demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
• Meet sponsor and regulatory-related requirements by ensuring that all communications with study’s sponsors and regulatory boards are conducted in a timely and effective manner.
• Design and plan for new activities and projects.
• Assist with the preparation and submission of applications to secure intramural and extramural funding to further support the activities of the Center.
• Draft scientific/scholarly manuscripts for publication in coordination with the PI.
• May present at national conferences to disseminate the work conducted by the Center.
• May participate in the hiring, training, and supervision of research personnel.
• Perform limited budgetary oversight, to include planning/forecasting, preparing, and approving budgetary changes in coordination with appropriate Center personnel.

HJF is seeking a Military Behavioral Health Psychologist to function as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) with expertise in evidence-based psychotherapies and the behavioral health needs of military personnel. This role focuses on the development and delivery of resources that facilitate dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices across the Military Health System (MHS).

This position will be in support of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences’ Consortium for Defense Psychology (CDP), which is based in Bethesda, MD. The Military Behavioral Health Psychologist will assist with activities related to CDP’s mission, which is to lead the development of a community of military culturally mindful and clinically competent providers through the delivery of high-quality training and education, the convening of experts, and the dissemination of research-based treatment and the latest topics in military behavioral health. The Henry M. Jackson Foundation provides administrative and management support to the Consortium. CDP strives to be the central hub for the Military Health System (MHS) in the development and implementation of training and education to clinicians in order to ensure that all service members, veterans, and their families receive quality behavioral healthcare that meets their unique needs. 

Responsibilities:

• Serves as an evidence-based psychotherapy (EBP) subject matter expert for the Training and Operations (TAO) project and across the Consortium, contributing where needed. 
• Develops and delivers presentations, workshops, and other curriculum-based learning tools in online and in-person delivery formats, to include presenting multi-day, EBP workshops. A main area of focus will be the behavioral health needs in operational and deployed military settings.
• Creates and provides consultation services to military and civilian behavioral health providers trained by CDP to provide continued learning support and ensure evidence-based psychotherapy practices are being used with fidelity. 
• Ensures that workshops and consultation materials are updated regularly by performing frequent literature reviews on evidence-based psychology practices, telehealth, and consultation with national subject matter experts. Makes necessary changes, additions, and updates to educational materials as needed. Coordinates with military and civilian experts to organize education materials.
• Serves as an active member and/or lead on Consortium-level special interest groups and assists with projects/programs.
• Contributes to CDP’s subject matter expert blog posts, podcasts, videos, infographics, asynchronous training materials, and other additional educational activities as needed.
• Prepares scholarly manuscripts for publication and presents at national and/or international conferences to disseminate the work conducted by the Consortium.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attending and participating in required training for the role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Candidates should be knowledgeable and experienced in at least one of the following areas/protocols: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Circadian Rhythm Sleep Wake Disorders, Unified Protocol, Written Exposure Therapy, or Trauma-informed care.
• Active licensure.
• Candidates should be knowledgeable about the behavioral health needs of military personnel, including challenges faced in operational and deployed settings.
• Candidates should have experience delivering professional presentations to adult learners including experience with curriculum development of presentations and other materials for adult continuing education.
• Subject matter expertise in EBPs, including the ability to integrate the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences, such that the candidate is able to provide training and consultation that is empirically sound as well as culturally competent, inclusive, and accessible across a wide variety of contexts.
• Excellent communication skills including writing appropriate reports, articles, white papers, and providing presentations to large audiences.
• Ability obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.
